Teaching Material

I provide one-to-one guitar lessons for adults and kids of all ages - either online via Skype, Facetime, Zoom etc. and also at the tution studio - depending on your preference. I also supply you with all necessary learning material - I often write all my own sheet music which is given to the student prior to or during lessons - at no extra cost

The material I teach you will to a certain extent depend on your own musical aims. I will also take into account your preferences and taste in music so that I can shape your lessons to appeal specifically to you as an individual. As I bear in mind the kind of material that appeals to you personally it will enhance your motivation and progress as a player. I am interested in teaching you not just what I believe you need to know - but also any other aspect of playing that may especially appeal to you - whether it be a playing style, a musical genre or artist of your choice. When requested I am always happy to fast-track students to achieve their immediate aims - at other times if the student wishes to, we take a more gradual & structured approach often using Trinity and RGT grade material - we sometimes use a combination of both.

Rhythm Guitar

I have always regarded rhythm guitar as the foundation when learning to play. Without that knowledge and ability to play competent rhythm we really just have the icing without the cake. Being a great lead guitarist without a strong foundation in rhythm is in my experience lacking balance - and after all, we need to be fully-rounded musicians who can tackle any aspect of playing. There is a whole universe of rhythm and strumming patterns - variations included - but in our lessons rhythm guitar can still be broken down to just a small selection of basic patterns that will cover just about anything we would initially look at.

Lead Guitar

Lead guitar playing is another subject all on it's own. This can include us looking at improvisation as well as the practical application of scales, fretting hand techniques, composition and melody. We'll look at some of those famous lead guitar breaks and find out how to play them plus how exactly they were written in the first place. I will also show you how to write and play your own lead guitar lines so that you can then jam along with other musicians or your favourite tracks.

Fingerstyle

We can also look at Fingerstyle Guitar which can not only play a part in the creating of rhythm but can also incorporate melody. Fingerpicking is used in pretty much every genre of guitar playing including folk, country, jazz, rock, heavy metal, pop and general mainstream guitar. Fingerstyle can be quite a beautiful, sometimes challenging - but always enjoyable aspect of playing guitar.

Composition / Songwriting

If you feel that you're a budding songwriter & would like some tuition and direction in how to go about the creative process of composing melody - and even writing complete songs - I'd be happy to help you. We'll look at the basics of composition and arrangement, the application of scales to create melodic phrases - in conjunction with common chord progressions, rhythms etc.
